The famous Europe Square of Batumi is located in the heart of the town, near the Astronomic Clock and Neptune Square. The tourists and the tour guides are particularly attracted to this spot, because of the Medea monument and its history.
It is considered, that way back, civilization of the Colchis existed in Eastern Georgia. The king's daughter, Medea was profoundly in love with Jason the Argonaut and helped him to steal the Golden Fleece - a symbol and a talisman of her people's wellbeing. The couple escaped on the ship Argo, which is depicted on the monument. Today, a statue of Medea holding the golden fleece is indeed gilded and represents wealth, progress and Georgia's connection with Europe.
